Hey Newarkers, there’s a gem on Halsey Street that any lover of art, jewelry, craftsmenship, community, or wine must visit. Artisan Collective, located at 25 Halsey St, the heart of Halsey Village is a woman owned and operated shop featuring fine handmade jewelry, hand bags, wall art, accessories and a wine club! Artisan Collective is a brilliant collaboration of 5 very unique businesses: Akirfa Design Studio, Sew What, Devino Enterprises, Kullah Rulz, and TwYSted Elegance.
When I met with Jae Quinlan, co-owner and Kullah Rulz artisan she told me that the 5 women, Jerri Lee, Saundra Toby-Heath, Burly Tuggle,Siobain Hatchette and herself have worked together for 3 years producing small marketplaces for customers to shop their handcrafted goods so the store is an organic manifestation of their individual dreams! When asked how she and the other women were able to open such an amazing store in hard economic times Jae says, “I called on my support. Realized I didn’t have to do it alone. There is a lot of love in this place and a lot of community connection.”
This Sunday, August 12 from 5pm-10pm Artisan Collective will celebrate its grand opening which will feature a trunk show, live entertainment, and a DJ.
The mission of Artisan Collective is to provide a place where artists get an opportunity to showcase there gifts and talents in excellence and to be a vehicle by which the Artisans engage the community and teach them things. Every other Wednesdays Artisan Collective hosts wine tastings and wine education classes, it also hosts a series of open mics, and a book of the month club.
