HYCIDE Magazine – The Art Issue Launch Party

There are very few places where art and commerce coexist harmoniously. Striking a balance has always been a struggle between the concept of producing art to create commerce vs allowing commerce to support the production of art. I, for one, believe in the latter; the purpose and end result should be producing great art. Yet we live in a world of consumerism and capitalism. And this is why (in my humble opinion) something like HYCIDE Magazine is such a flash of brilliance.

This past Wednesday, did you happen to see a Newark resident featured on a daily news broadcast? No it wasn’t Newark’s Mayor, Cory Booker, as he talked Governing Policy on The Daily Show. (Although both aired on the same day) It was a “Doppelganger," featuring NBC Today’s weather Anchor Al Roker and his "twin", also know as South-ward resident, Tony Vaughn.

The wrath of Sandy was something out of a movie unparalleled to any other storm in the Tri-State area. It has been more than 3 days since the storm- people have lost their electricity, cars, windows and homes! Since Tuesday PSE&G has been working around the clock outside my apartment building repairing a huge transformer explosion.

Newark uprooted from Hurricane Sandy

PSEG reports that over 255,000 Essex county customers were without power Tuesday morning and 95% were still unresolved Tuesday evening. While most of downtown Newark now has power, many past those lines are still without. We are encouraged Newarkers that have power and are safe to reach out to their peers/neighbors or to take the initiative to clean up their street.

Shuttles Packed for Public Art

Since 2009, the Newark Public Art Program has partnered with City Without Walls Gallery and other non-profit arts organizations to create large-scale public murals with artists, community-based groups, and young people across Newark. To date, 15 have been completed and six more are currently in progress at this time. This past weekend, during the Newark Open Door Tour, cWOW conducted their annual City Murals Tour that shed light on the public work that has been developed from this program.

Armed with a steamroller, a local artist aims to set record for looooooongest print and is seeking 500 to 600 participants to come and create the art that will be printed. The Quarter Mile Print Project begins this Sunday, October 7th at 11am in Washington Park, Newark.
