Ever since the Sandy Hook tragedy, the serious issue of gun violence in America has taken center stage as a hot button political issue to be immediately addressed. Clearly, something has got to change. But what’s a fashionista like me to do to address gun violence in my community?
Welp, Mayor Cory Booker has the answer! In an appearance on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show Thursday night, Mayor Booker promoted, “The Caliber Collection,” his fashionable collaboration with Jessica Mindich, creator of Jewelry For a Cause.
The bracelets that make up the line are made from the metal of 250 guns and bullet casings seized by the Newark Police Department as part of the city’s gun buy-back program. In doing so, each bracelet, which features the serial number of a seized gun and the word “NEWARK” etched on its side, has been transformed from a weapon of destruction into a symbol of peace.
The silver and brass bangles are valued at up to $375, and Booker told Maddow that “a large percentage of the proceeds” is used to fund BuyBack Amnesty programs in Newark. Since the collection went public on November 28, more than 400 items have sold, raising $20,000 for city gun buybacks. The success of the collection has surprised skeptics, including Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio, who has now been made a believer.
