“VISUALIZING SOCIAL JUSTICE:”
La Casa de Don Pedro, one of Newark’s premier community based social service and community development organizations is hosting its annual fundraiser event La Casa es Su Casa. The cocktail reception will be held today, Thursday, May 1, 2014, from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at The
New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
With Ines Rosales of Fox 5’s Good Day New York as the evening’s emcee La Casa es Su Casa will celebrate May Day (International Worker’s Day) and honor champions for social justice Lyneir Richardson, Phyllis Salowe-Kaye, and Milly Silva. Richardson, who recently joined Rutgers Business School Center for Urban Entrepreneurship and Economic Development as its Executive Director was formerly CEO of Brick City Development Corporation. Salowe-Kaye has served as New Jersey
Citizen Action’s Executive Director for the past 29 years, a leading consumer watchdog. Silva is Executive Vice President of the 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. All honorees have made great strides in creating work opportunities and advocating for worker rights in Greater Newark.
A La Casa prisoner re-entry program participant will provide a testimonial of his experiences upon release from incarceration and youth from La Casa’s After School Enrichment Program will showcase their original artwork in an exhibit entitled “Visualizing Social Justice.”
A tricky tray raffle with prizes such as a MacBook Air, iPad Air, spa packages, and theater tickets will ensure a lively event. All proceeds will benefit La Casa de Don Pedro.
“As my family benefited from La Casa when I was a kid growing up in the neighborhood, this organization is very near and dear to my heart,” says Rita Robles, La Casa de Don Pedro’s Board Vice-President and poverty law attorney at Legal Services of New Jersey. “Anyone looking to support a worthy organization with a tremendous impact on some of the most vulnerable members of our community should join us for a fantastic event on May 1st!
