Fresh, Healthy Twist on LPMF Vending

The Lincoln Park Music Festival is known for many things, primarily MUSIC. Another BIG draw, and one of my personal favorite things about the festival is the FOOD! Ten – fifteen food vendors stretch around the park’s path dishing out the best of Newark. This year we saw something a bit refreshing and HEALTHY. Vonda’s Kitchen, located on W. Kinney in Newark, brought delicious Southern Cuisine with healthy twist to the LPMF.

Vonda’s fun, fresh, “green” tent stood out at the festival. Their menu included some of our favorites; Braised Oxtails, Short Ribs, Smothered Turkey Wings, Catfish/Whiting, and Baked Chicken, served up with all of your typical sides and more. Salads were made on sight with a demonstration to promote healthy living.

Every day of the festival between 5 – 6pm, a 1-hour event created by the Sustainability Office of the City of Newark called “Turn-Table Tastings” took place. This hour was full of real food demos, free samplings, and stories about the connection between the African Diaspora’s culinary and musical traditions will be celebrated. Head chef of Vonda’s Kitchen, Vonda McPherson provided free samples and recipes of dishes made especially for Turn-Table Tastings.

    Vonda’s Turn-Table Tastings dishes incorporated Newark-grown collards, swiss chard, and zucchini from The Greater Newark Conservancy’s urban farm on Court Street. We chose Vonda’s Kitchen to be our first Turn-Table Tastings chef because she has been serving up “Delicious, Healthy, Comfort Food” since March 2012 on W. Kinney.     Turn-Table Tastings is a cultural and educational event created by the Sustainability Office of the City of Newark to celebrate Real Food Nourishing Newark ingredients and chefs with music connected to the cuisine featured.     Would love to see more of this kind of food vendor there. The majority of the food is fried and heavy. Cheers to Vonda’s for bringing the Fresh!
