July 31, 2013 (Newark, NJ) –

Due to the anticipation of rain today, the normally scheduled “Sounds of the City” Outdoor open air concert scheduled  for August 1st, NJPAC will relocate the Thursday, August 1st free concert by acclaimed percussionist and singer Sheila E. to the elegant 2,800-seat Prudential Hall. For the first time, NJPAC is moving a Horizon Foundation Sounds of the City performance from the outdoor Theater Square into Prudential Hall, rather than cancel the event due to anticipated inclement weather.

All tickets are free and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 4pm, Thursday, August 1st. Tickets will be available in front of the NJPAC Rotunda, One Center Street in downtown Newark. All seating will be general admission, and patrons must be present to receive a ticket. Performances will begin at 5:15pm, with Sheila E. taking the stage at 6:30pm. The opening act will be New Jersey singer and songwriter Joanna Burns.

NJPAC Executive Producer David Rodriguez said, “What was true decades ago in show business remains true today: The show must go on. Horizon Foundation Sounds of the City is an important program providing free outdoor concerts every week throughout the summer. With the forecast of rain, we are moving the festivities inside to Prudential Hall with the same artists, hospitality and enjoyment guaranteed for all.”

Grammy® nominee Sheila E. is regarded as one of the most accomplished percussionists in music today. She is not only a former member of Prince’s touring band – she has a catalog of beloved hits that includes “The Glamorous Life,” “A Love Bizarre” and “Hold Me,” among many others. She has also toured with world renowned artists such as Ringo Starr, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle and Diana Ross.

No outside food, backpacks, coolers or drinks will be allowed inside the venue. Beverages may be purchased inside the Prudential Hall lobby, and NICO Kitchen + Bar will be open for dining.

Please come early as to seating will be limited to the capacity of the hall.
