Happy Monday, mavens and bargainistas. Each week, your neighborhood mecca of style Brick City Varsity endeavors to replicate designer looks on a Brick City budget. Featuring items purchased from Newark-area thrift stores (all of which are available for purchase at our private, appointment-only showroom in North Newark), our ensembles provide a sartorial treasure map that will help you create show-stopping looks tailored for your life in Brick City.
This week’s look is inspired in part by actress Dakota Fanning’s feature in a recent issue of UK Vogue in which she sported about $3,203 worth of Yves Saint Laurent. We loved the look’s bold prints and breezy fabrication, but more than anything else, we noted how its play with volume could be replicated by your average woman in very practical, stylish ways.
The YSL shorts featured pleated details that suited Fanning perfectly, but were unlikely to work on all body types. So, we turned to Diane von Furstenberg’s gaucho pants for a similar silhouette. We settled upon DvF’s Acmis Clean Gaucho Pants, which were less whimsical and more business casual — a great fit for the BCV profile. And since we were heightening the ensemble’s formal appeal, we made a bee line for Dolce & Gabbana’s satin secretary shirt. As any BCV devotee can tell you, secretary blouses comprise at least 50% of our collection of women’s tops, and we just can’t get enough of their prim, retro feel and fastidious collar ties. For our interpretation, we toned down the palette and added pearls for a healthy dose of demure refinement.
If this ensemble packs too much of a punch to waste it on another day in the office, it would work perfectly for the Newark Public Library’s gala event, An Evening with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Hosted by Mayor Cory Booker, tomorrow’s event will do more than allow you to rub elbows with one of this country’s most influential scholars of the American experience while kicking off the library’s 125th anniversary celebration — it’ll allow you to give your best naughty librarian look without breaking the bank. Buy it today, wear it tomorrow. Now, THAT’S Brick City Couture!
