Social media made it possible for me to meet Mumin McBride, Newark’s own 25 year-old fashion prodigy. Always eager to tap the freshest young talent in Brick City, I quickly jumped at the opportunity to collaborate.
A graduate of Malcolm X Shabazz High School, Mumin’s clients range from pampered preschoolers in need of graduation gear and ballroom starlets in search of the most unique effect to prom night prima donnas and city-savvy socialites. His evening wear is decidedly dramatic, occasionally pairing sleek silhouettes with voluminous shoulder detail and larger-than-life spikes. His casual collection, contrastingly, is playful and graphic, often integrating smiley faces, phrases like “dope” or an array of zippers.
Where the young designer truly strikes gold is in his menswear. Because men are often an afterthought in fashion, Mumin’s line of dressy sweats is a godsend for Newark’s men – offering an enviable balance of stand-out style and undeniable comfort.

Last month, I had the pleasure of catching up with Mumin during his exclusive trunk show. Hosted by Halsey Street’s much beloved Karma Consignment boutique, the show featured an amazing selection that spanned the designer’s 5 year tenure.

Perhaps the most exciting addition to the line was Mumin’s outerwear. The piece above, for example, can be actually be worn upside down!

fellow designer Malcolm Diggs showed his support and a few pieces of his own.
On the heels of the success of his trunk show, Mumin shared that he was looking forward to creating regular opportunities to introduce more Newarkers to his work. We’ll certainly keep you posted, as this is one Brick City talent that you won’t want to miss.

Excellent coverage! I’ve been a fan of Malcolm Diggs from his early beginnings and watched him evolve as a designer. I’m excited to be ‘introduced’ to the work of Mumin McBride! I remember when my mother spoke with you Slick, offering her love and support as well as sound advice having been in the Fashion Industry herself. Look what God did! I am very happy and truly proud to see any family member of mine succeed in their passion with continual growth. Very inspiring to see such a young person following their purpose driven life!!! Aunt Laura must certainly be extremely proud of you Slick along with the rest of your family. My parents most certainly are! May God Bless you and keep you in His loving arms and warm embrace.
