Where Babe’s Cheesesteaks once stood now hosts a newcomer. As of December 2012, we now have Al’s CheeseSteak House, right across the street from NJIT. Al’s has free WiFi and offers delivery until 10 pm to certain areas.
They offer a wide selection of cheesesteaks, chicken steaks, burgers, and even breakfast options. The menu is large and there is something for everyone, as long as you’re a carnivore. There are also a lot of cookies and pastries on the counter for those with a sweet tooth. They even serve wings.
The set-up looks exactly like the previous restaurant. It is relatively spacious, with plenty of room to sit and even more room to stand in line on a busy day. One of the best things about this place is that the hours are convenient, although opening at 9 am doesn’t give early risers much time to get coffee or breakfast before classes or work. (The coffee is mediocre at best but at least they have some.) Closing at 10 or 11 pm is great though, and gives us night owls a chance to get something tasty for a late dinner or snack. Plus, the late Thursday hours make it the perfect place for a quick and greasy pre-party meal.
The décor is cute, especially the NJIT and Rutgers flags and jerseys. There is not a lot on the walls but the view of the street makes it a great place to sit and people watch. The staff is friendly and quick and can help you choose a delicious sub if you can’t decide.
When I ordered a pizzasteak, I certainly wasn’t expecting a more than 12 inch sub. A pizzasteak is a cheesesteak with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. It was a delight. Although the presentation wasn’t fabulous (I thought the sub looked floppy and thin), it was superb. The meat was tender and juicy and it had just the right amount of sauce. Plus, at its size it felt like two full cheesesteaks.
The sides are great too. The fries and onion rings are nice and crunchy. The other meals are decent too, but I recommend the cheesesteaks to anyone who hasn’t tried, get the House Cheesesteak. It comes with peppers, onions, and thinly sliced potatoes. It’s delicious and a great specialty sub. It was full of flavor and incredibly filling.
They are also great at their burgers and their breakfast meals are pretty large. I recommend them to anyone looking for a great cheesesteak or some delicious greasy eggs and bacon.
