Aferro’s 4th Annual Art Party and Auction

Aferro’s 4th Annual Art Party and Auction

It is fundraising season for Newark Art Galleries. Just this past weekend, Index Art Center hosted their Annual BBQ benefit. Despite the dreary weather, the outdoor event still managed to fill up the patio at 27 Mix.  A couple weeks prior Aljira, A Center for Contemporary Art, had their impressive and super successful  Annual Fine Art Auction. And now…. (drum roll please)… AFERRO, a multi-floor gallery and studio residency space, located on Market St, is getting ready for their annual ARTPARTY! (Anytime the words art + party are placed together I get excited!)

This Saturday, June 16th, Gallery Aferro invites you to join them for their 4th Annual Art Party and Auction.  Attendees are promised an impressive list of artwork to bid on (reference the below artist roster), a cause worth spending for (scroll down), and an excellent array of entertainment, food and alcohol. If you buy a ticket NOW, it is just $20 to attend. So clear your schedule, drop by an ATM and we will see you there!

In case that wasn’t convincing enough, owners Emma Wilcox and Evonne Davis gave us three really amazing reasons WHY we should attend:

 1) Newark Art Starpower: Current Gallery Aferro studio resident Ruby Amanze now the 3rd Fulbright Scholar to have participated in our 5 year old residency program. Amanze was awarded this year, and she joins current Gallery Aferro studio resident Nell Painter and alumn Norene Leddy in this honor.

Jerry Gant, Gallery Aferro studio residency alumn created a front window installation for our residency retrospective “Through You Into Action” and his performance at Gallery Aferro can be seen in the Gantalist. http://vimeo.com/35295963

JC Lenochan, Arts High educator, current Gallery Aferro studio resident and Franklin Furnace performance grant recipient has been hard at work in his studio preparing for a multi-city performance piece in 2013. His work addresses issues of racism and classism in the educational system.

Newark gallerists represented: Stan Sudol and Christine Wagner, owners of GUGA and Kevin Darmanie, Gallery Aferro studio residency alum and owner, the Kedar Studio of Art.

2) A damn good cause:  Not only do tickets, art sales and tax deductible donations at the event support exhibitions, residencies and publications, but they support our 2-year old education program for Newark’s young women, Identity Blueprint. As a young nonprofit, we depend on public support to keep this valuable program growing and available for youth who would otherwise not have arts opportunities.

Our free arts intensive runs from March through May every spring, allowing young women from every ward to learn cyanotype photography and digital animation from successful women artists.

For 2012, we partnered with the Newark Museum and the Montclair Art Museum to have the students create original, irreverent interpretations of 19th century work depicting teenage girlhood from the Newark Museum’s Fall 2012 exhibition, Angels and Tomboys. The artwork and voices of 16, 17 and 18 year old women from Newark will be part of this major exhibition, an opportunity we are thrilled to have created for youth of this city.

3) ALCOHOL, in a fine atmosphere. In addition to our ass-kicking (a direct quote) mojitos, which we make with organic lime and fresh mint, this year we are proudly sponsored by Hunterdon Brewery, who call themselves “purveyors of enjoyable fermented beverages.” http://www.hunterdonbrewing.com/ Anyone who has been to one of our benefit events previously knows that there will be vast quantities of said fermented beverages, and this year they will be yummy NJ craft beers.

Said yummy beverages can be consumed in a fine atmosphere with live jazz by the William Spaulding Quartet, the thrill of the auction, door prize drawings, and novel activities. http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/WilliamSpauldingJazzQuintet
