St. Raymond Comes Up Big At Newark Invitational

Temperatures may have been frigid outside, but the crowd inside the Prudential Center was certainly fired up for the second annual Newark Invitational High School Basketball tournament, which was held this past Saturday.

The first contest between Newark’s own University High School and St. Raymond of New York began promptly at 11am.

The game proved to be a fierce battle between the two schools. The first half featured a great deal of back-and-forth action. Heading into half-time, University appeared to be on their way to victory as they were up 32-29.

However, the tide turned quickly in the second half as St. Raymond, lead by top scorers Daniel Dingle and Nkereuwem Okoro, were able to outscore the opposition 18 to 13 in the third quarter.

Things got worse in the fourth quarter for University and the team only managed to score seven points, which enabled St. Raymond to pick up the win by a score of 61-52.

Following the conclusion of the game the Brian C. Doherty MVP award was given out to one player on each team. Kazembe Abif received the honors for University after shooting 5-for-13 and scoring 12 points with seven rebounds.

St. Raymond’s Daniel Dingle won the award after scoring an impressive 21 points, which was by far the most by any individual player on either team.

Overall, both teams played a fundamentally sound game; however it seemed to me as if University ran out of steam at the end. Nonetheless, both teams deserve recognition for even being selected to be apart of the highly selective tournament.
