While we haven’t done our own research, we were told our home was built about 1880. While it’s great to live in a piece of Newark’s history, Rob was surfing around eBay when he stumbled upon this little gem.
Although “little” isn’t really the right word. This atlas is HUGE!
I love the old binding held together with screws.
Written in 1926, we’re excited to own a little piece of Newark history.
It’s volume 1 of a 3 book set. The first page reads:
Embracing the Section of the City North from Penn R. R. Market St. and S. Orange Ave to 12th St. to Central Ave to City Line
The pages are plates, so each is blank on the back.
Military Park’s Wars of America monument was unveiled in 1926 – the year this atlas was published. Fun fact – The massive monument was created by Mount Rushmore artist Gutzon Borglum.
It seems Raymond Blvd used to be called Canal Street – which would make sense because the light rail light that runs under Raymond Blvd was laid in the old canal.
Throughout the years, people have written notes and made little updates on the pages.
Do you own a little piece of Brick City history? A cool photo you took or something you found on the street? We’d love to hear about it!

When I was rennovating my hallway, I found Cards and letter dating from 1908, it actually had the original st names on the address (Bowery st vs. current day Fleming Ave).

What a find! Love the graphics! Is your house on those maps somewhere?
I just had the diabolical idea of cutting apart the book (I know, sacrilege) and framing individual maps, or even using them as wallpaper …!

Another site has a few of these maps lists: http://newarkmaps.net/photos/index.php?cat=10
Amazing that Raymond blvd was once Morris Canal! West Market was known as Bank St. A macy’s use to be in Newark?!

This is a fantastic find! I especially love the pic of the spine. It would look great as a black and white framed photo.
