We all know Newark’s Theater District is almost non-existent. Exhibit A: The now dilapidated Paramount theater. However, Newark has a rich history of theater that is just itching to be rediscovered and restored. Matt Gosser’s ‘Theatre Town’ hopes to do just that, by using ‘archaeology’ to call attention to the current conditions and forgotten splendor of Newark theaters. Everything from photographs to set design will be exhibited at The NJ School of Architecture Gallery, some art using actual pieces of debris from run down theaters in Newark.
The opening reception will feature food, drink, live music, and performance art. Gosser’s exhibit is just the first event of Newark Art Council’s Open Doors 2009. From October 23-25 art patrons can visit galleries, shows, and events in the Downtown Newark area.
‘Theatre Town’ runs Monday through Friday until November 28. The opening reception starts at 5pm on Saturday, October 17. Want to know more about archaeology? Visit Gosser’s website and check out his other projects.
