Summer Camp Isn’t What it Used to Be…

Students from the WorldofMoney.org gathered at the Greater Newark Conservancy’s Outdoor Learning Center for a Morning of Service. They learned about the history of the landmark on Prince Street and Springfield Avenue, and then got to work.

I asked them how they ended up over here, and it turns out that the NYC based non-profit has a number of students from Jersey who commute to camp in Manhattan each morning. So it simply made sense to make Newark one of the stops.

Stops?

There were five stops in total:

City Meals on Wheels – East Harlem, Manhattan
City Meals on Wheels – Midtown Manhattan
Von King Park – Brooklyn
Riverside Park – Manhattan
Outdoor Learning Center – Newark, New Jersey

“I thought the community service last Saturday was a fun, project to work on – and I think we all get an applause for offering to help the community and for giving our time.” – Avery, a WorldofMoney.org Student

The Director said, “Children need to have service ingrained in their spirits at an early age.”

There’s a sort of positive irony that a financial literacy camp would place emphasis on giving…to benefit anyone (other than self)! After all, the financial industry isn’t particularly popular in the eyes of the average American right now. Yet this frustration doesn’t make it any less important to understand it.

Bravo WorldofMoney.org. As a participant in WofM and a financial services professional, I can tell you that these extraordinary young people are well served in learning that service to community is an integral part of prosperity and wealth building.
I hope that these childrens’ successes make evident the value of this program to the participants and to our communities as a whole. we need more of this. Thank you Ms Lamb.
