The Phantom Skate Park

A few weeks ago Kyle wrote about the woes of bikers in Newark and I couldn’t help but ask, “What about skaters?” For years I’ve heard that there is a skate park in Newark and for years I’ve walked the streets of Newark aimlessly searching for this skate park. It’s about six years since I first heard this rumor and I still haven’t found this phantom park. Furthermore, I haven’t been able to find a place where I can skate without being accosted by Newark’s finest.

I used to skate at the PSEG building on Broad Street, however; after a few grinds here and there I would be thrown out by PSEG security officers. In the summer of 2008 Washington Park was the place to be but due to safety reasons – the moving train coming at me – I had to relocate. I tried skating on the streets of Newark but in the summer the streets are too crowded to even walk much less skate. Then there were late night excursions down Raymond Blvd but after being fined by Rutgers Police I realized that the safest and most economical place to indulge in my passion for skating was a local abandoned tennis court. But summer is here again and I’m ready to get back in my skates or on my board, so if you know where this skate park is or if you know anywhere that is skater friendly and/or biker friendly please let me know.

I’ve seen some telltale grind marks on the low walls and steps of the big post office and federal buildings between Mulberry and Broad – but talk about places that’ll prolly lead to a quick ticket…
I feel like maybe I saw a place from the train window in the South Ward? Maybe just wishful thinking.
When you find the place let me know. In the mean time, solidarity! We’ll take the streets!

I think there is a roller hockey rink at a park in the ironbound (but I could be wrong). In Jersey City, skateboarders bring props to the outdoor roller hockey rink downtown and skate there.

I think I’ve also heard there is a skatepark in Kearny or Harrison (but again, could be wrong.)

I just had a conversation about this on Monday night, strange – but yeah, I believe there is a skatepark in Harrison. It would be a great idea for Newark though.
