Angel Investors.

TheBargain

Long story short: Someone decided to start an organization that buys groceries in bulk so everyone can have them at insanely low prices. Helps families, helps seniors, helps singles. Basically anyone on a budget – financial or mental (as in not having the time/desire to constantly think about what’s for dinner).

What it means to you: You can order the menu of the month online, and pick up at one of two locations in Newark. (There are about two dozen locations within a reasonable driving/public transport distance.) They are expanding so maybe there will be a new location downtown in the near future.

You can get the grocery pack (”enough for a family of four for a week”) for $30. You can get the fully cooked set of 10 meals for $28 (That’s $2.80 per meal, folks). They’ve got alot more options (like allergen-free or all meats or all veges).

If this pre-planned menu style isn’t you, (maybe?) get it for someone you know. And there is someone you know who is (living?) on mediocre pizza and Ramen. That’s cute during college, but…not now.

Angel Food Ministries is a nationwide effort, so getting these groceries means that besides the discount (and one less thing to think about), you’re helping to sustain the (non-denominational) operation that serves 500,000 familes per month across the USA. Nice thing to remember while you’re grilling a NY strip steak instead of munching on cold fries.

Angel food Ministries is an amazing organization and an amazing idea. I love it that no one has to qualify and everyone can participate. I also love that they donate money back to their host sites. Everyone wins! I wish more churches would sign up as distribution sites. This is a program that can benefit everyone.

I do hope more locations open up around Newark, especially Downtown. (The closest locations right now are in the West Ward.) I think AFM could be a first step to getting a larger (high quality) “brick and mortar” market in 07102…something similar to Eden Gourmet would be ideal (including local produce we already get from the farmer’s markets).
