Remember when in order to find a book you wanted from the library you had to travel all the way to library, then dig through the card catalog to find the particular book you were looking for? Well, those days are a thing of the past as libraries try to bridge the gap between what some consider an obscure literary form (reading) and technology. The Newark Public libaries are among those libraries trying to make navigating the many shelves easier. According to James Burse, a library employee, the whole catalog is available on their website, www.npl.org. What did I do when I heard this? I tested it like any technology addicted person would do! I decided to search for the latest books I’d been reading and I came across the whole series. I came across very satisfied in that area, but I wish I had known that before I bought all 8 of the 9 books in the series.

Are people, like myself, making more use of the libraries in an attempt to save money? According to Burse and Jane at the information desk, yes. circulation has risen since people are cutting corners, especially in the media department. Did you know in addition to books you can rent movies for up to a week? And cds? The late fees on these are way cheaper than blockbuster. Imagine 15 cents a day, versus being billed the total price of the movie.
And if you don’t have a computer you can use the libraries. “You see people coming to use the computers to look for jobs and update their resumes more now,” said Jane. People are making good use of the 2 hours they can use a day. If you have your own laptop you can visit the library and have free wifi. Very interesting indeed if you ask me. The last time I’d visited a library wifi was something I barely heard of.

The Newark Public Library participates in an after school homework program called Club Success. This if for students grades 1-8 seeking teach assisted homework help using library materials. Hours vary by branch.
Wait, branches?? Did you know that Newark has 11 libraries for people to utilize? I sure didn’t. The main (and largest) branch is located on Washington Avenue and there are others sprawled throughout the different sections of the city. The main branch, with its horrible parking is the branch, unfortunately, with the best hours for those who have busy days. They are open M-F until 8:30 p.m. whereas the other branches, such as the one closest me to in the Weequhaic section close at 5:30 weekdays except for Wednesdays. When asked would the libraries be getting extended hours due to increases in circulation over the past few months Burse replied, “No, not with everything going on.” Such a shame. I’d definitely spend my time reading in a library versus Barnes and Noble. Imagine if the libraries added a small cafe? SPLENDID!

To get a library card all you need is proof that you live or work in Newark. This card is valid at all Newark libraries and even in Irvington. I definitely suggest getting one, you never know when it might come in handy!

Great question Am, i was also wondering what series of books Cleo was reading?
Anyhow, I am a frequent library user (books are expensive!) furthermore Libraries often have really great documentaries and cult classics. I would suggest everyone get the sticker that allows them access to all surrounding local libraries.

I love True Blood! How are the books? Are they “girly?” Or is there enough action and stuff going on to keep a guy interested?
