It was just a few weeks ago that the prestigious New York Times accredited Newark’s growing downtown art scene. Once again, the force of the island crosses the river and gives our favorite Jersey City a shout out!
Check out TimeOut NEW YORK!
In the featured DAY TRIP of the month, Newark was the city that free lance writer, Grace Smith believes you should own. Featuring the Newark Museum’s exciting 100-hour Centennial Celebration that starts this week, Smith goes beyond the museums courtyard. Smith gives New Yorkers a guide to hotspots to eat, hang and view art.
As it is always interesting to hear an outsiders view on where to go, I looked into this article ready to take a hint or two from a New Yorker.
If your looking for a place to grub, check out the tapas lounge, Mompou on Ferry Street (77 Ferry St.). Also according to Grace, for rodizio, it is best at the Ironbound’s infamous Iberia (63 Ferry St.), and for “less pomp and better value” Mi Pequeno Mexico (81 Ferry St.). Central Diner also gets some headway as THE place to grab breakfast! As some one who has consumed many breakfasts at Central Diner, it made me very happy to see their name in this magazine!
Places to hang according to Grace… Art Kitchen, Newark Art Supply and The Coffee Cave. We all love and adore our Halsey St. Caffeine trio! Grace refers to this area as Newark’s, “east-village.”
Places to view art… Gallery Afero, Rupert Raven Contemporary and City Without Walls Gallery. Our favorite downtown thrivers.
While I think it is amazing that TimeOut New York featured an article about Newark, I want to suggest to them linking up with a local next time. What about 27 Mix, Newark’s landmark pub McGovern’s Tavern, trendy Misavi, rockabilly bar Hell’s Kitchen Lounge, THE PRUDENTIAL CENTER, Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, NJIT, NJPAC, alternative space Jajo Gallery, RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, etc, etc ????????!!!!!
Newark has a whole lot more than you think Grace!!

Mompou is amazing. My favorite place in the Ironbound. I’ve been meaning to write about it, but have been waiting for it to get nicer out to capitalize on outdoor seating.
